ChiltonDirector, Institute of Advanced TheologyDear Bruce,This is my annual report of scholarly and academic activities, including academic public service, for the academic year 2003-2004, specifically, June 1, 2003 through May 31, 2004. With the Presidents and Deans concurrence, my title has changed to conform to my academic location and assignment at Bard. I believe this venue will make for a much more substantial utilization of my commitment to undergraduate education than was the case in the Program in Religion from my full-time arrival, 2000, to the present, over four years.Teaching: Fall semester: Scripture, Mishnah, MidrashI also taught a tutorial course (two credits) to Jason Schwartz, senior in Religion, on ancient Judaism, with special reference to the use of texts in the study of religion. This involved an hour and a half to two hours a week. It was not a productive exercise and yielded no substantial educational results. Spring Semester: Religious Foundations of Western Civilization [with Professor Chilton]The course involved organizing a textbook and obtaining seventeen chapters, including those written by yourself and by me, and reproducing the textbook for student study for this semester. A lot of work went into that project. The course also required organizing a variety of public events, by guests of Bard, by Bard professors, and so on and so forth. For 2004-5 semester One I have taken responsibility for two senior projects for 2004-5, Ben Feinberg and Molly Andrus. In addition, for fall semester 2004-5 I have agreed to give two two-credit courses, one on Mishnaic Hebrew, the other on Zionist theory, for undergraduates who asked for such courses. This is in addition to my regularly scheduled course, Altruism in the Religions of the World.Supererogatory activities connected with teaching, at Bard and in public, in 2003-2004 1. I continued work on the academic conference/course, Altruism in the Religions of the World, to be held at Bard in November, 2004, and secured a grant from the Templeton Foundation of $25,000 in that connection. I also identified colleagues to discuss the topic within the several religions under examination and organized the program. There will be a course on Altruism in the Religions of the World associated with the conference, to be given by Prof. Chilton and myself. The students in the course will read the papers in advance and prepare questions and comments on them.2. As noted above: I organized a text and source-book for the Bard course, Religious Foundations of Western Civilization: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, to be published by A. B. Longmans, NYC. This involves readings and introductions for a fifteen week course. Co-editor is Professor Chilton.3. I began work on an international project of three conferences on the religious resources of toleration and tolerance, to be held in 2006-2007 at American University of Cairo, Bard College NYC campus, and University of Bologna in Italy; sponsored by American University of Cairo, Bard College, University of Rochester, University of Bologna, University of Piacenza. A program planning session for this project is to be held at Bard on November 15, 2004, involving colleagues from the sponsoring universities. I secured a grant from the John Templeton Foundation in partial support of this project. I have made application for support to other funding agencies as well. The University of Bologna is committed to support the local costs of its segment of the project, and the American University of Cairo has made the same commitment for the Egyptian component of the project.4. I participated in the project organized by Andrew Harvey in NYC June 17, 2004.ScholarshipBooks Published From June 1, 2003, through June 1, 2004In order of appearance of bound copies or proofs, with date of reception indicated I do not log in those titles that have gone to press in the period under review but that have not yet appeared in bound copies. These are listed in the academic year in which they are published in bound copies. I make it a standard practice to send copies of all my books, as they appear, to the President, Vice President, and Dean, as well as to the Library and to the Director of the Institute of Advanced Theology.1.
